Commitment and Promises

By Joy Nix

Have you every made a serious commitment? Have you kept it? What if we all didn’t keep our commitments? If a parent didn’t commit to rearing their child—that child may be neglected or even die. Over 50% of today’s marriages break the pledge of “till death do us part.” Look where that has gotten us. Athletes could change their minds at the drop of a hat and sign with a new team. Police commit to protect and to serve. We enjoy peace and safety because of their dedication; otherwise our cities would have anarchy. Physicians take the Hippocratic oath. If not, illness and disease might be rampant. Sometimes a commitment requires giving of your time, your talent, your resources, and possibly your life. Have you forgotten promises to God or others?

God even makes commitments! That’s right. A rainbow reminds us of God’s promise to never flood the earth; Abraham was promised to be the Father of a great nation—as many as the stars in the sky the sand in the sea—that has been fulfilled. Mary was promised God’s Son as Savior to the world.

What if God didn’t keep his promises? What if Jesus changed his mind on the way to the cross…felt he didn’t have the time…just didn’t want to do it, decided the pain was to much to bear; that separation from God (even for a moment) wasn’t worth the effort? Where would we be? For sure, working to be better people, but our best would not be good enough to get to Heaven. What will you do with your commitments?

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. I Peter 1:4
