Disaster Relief Group Serves Tornado Victims Through Friday
An Oklahoma City metro-area citizens’ donation distribution center has collected donations for tornado victims who received damage in the May 10, 2010 tornado. The disaster relief center is a partner with the American Red Cross. Donations will be available to distribute at 25 NW 9th Street to tornado victims now through Friday.
While debris clean-up and temporary housing needs are still concerns for tornado victims, an abundant supply of donated household items, furniture, and clothing are available now for tornado victims. Donations have been gathered by volunteers who wanted to assist Oklahomans who received damage from the devastating tornadoes. Lori Ford, co-organizer, says the tornado victims may visit the warehouse at 25 NW 9th Street, near downtown Oklahoma City, during the hours of 12-7pm Monday through Friday to receive donations.
Carrie Corbin of Oklahoma City, OK and Lori Ford of Edmond, OK orgainized the grass-roots relief effort which has officially been designated as a partner with the American Red Cross. They creatively used the online social media outlets of Twitter and Facebook to benefit the victims of the recent storm.
The center also needs volunteers to assist tornado victims at the storage warehouse in order to remain open through Friday. Interested volunteers should email okdonations@yahoo.com or come ready to work a shift at NW 9th, Monday through Friday 12pm-7pm.
“I had a failed garage sale and thought this would be a great opportunity to give back since I was given after losing everything on May 3,” Corbin said. “I knew that other people wanted to donate as well, so I contacted Lori Ford and together, we found a place to store donations and organized this event for any wanted to donate quickly using Twitter and Facebook.”
