About the Ledger

The Little Axe Ledger is published for and about the community of Little Axe, Oklahoma. Our mission is to provide interesting information and helpful resources to area residents and visitors alike. We encourage submission of news, notices, articles or photographs.

Little Axe is a rural community in the central part of the state. It is essentially a school district, loosely reflecting an area settled by the Big Jim Band of the Shawnee in 1886.

The construction of Thunderbird Lake in the early 1960′s engulfed much of early Little Axe, requiring the relocating of homes, schools, and graves. Originally named Little River State Park, what is now Thunderbird State Park, consists of some 7,000 acres of land surrounding 6,000 acres of water. It is the second most visited Oklahoma state park.

Today, Little Axe makes up the land area largely east of the lake. It includes the far east end of Norman along with an unincorporated portion of eastern Cleveland County.

The random photos displayed at the top of each page were all taken in Little Axe.
One of the Ledger’s goals is to digitally archive historical information of the area. Little Axe has a rich, diverse history in itself, let alone the pre-Little Axe era. Information for this project is welcomed.

And of course, your comments and suggestions are also appreciated.
